I've left it a few weeks before leaving my review to have time to reflect as I don't like to leave negative reviews. However The White Buck disappointed for a number of reasons, and it was a stay in a cheaper but far better hotel this week that made me feel justified giving it just two stars. My greeting at reception when I arrived was far from friendly and bordered on dismissive. The barman throughout the evening can only be described as surly and distinctly unfriendly. He never once even made eye contact when serving, and took to gesturing towards drinks rather than say what was available. My family and I had booked in advance for my mum's birthday and as there were 9 of us for dinner in the restaurant they had asked us to confirm meal choices in advance which is fair enough. A couple of us had been disappointed in the veggie options on the menu sent through but found things we could enjoy. It was very frustrating to then turn up to dinner only to find out they had an entire veggie menu specially for January that they hadn't bothered to email to us that week along with the main menu and by then it was too late to change our order. Not that it would have helped - despite making us order in advance all the orders got messed up anyway and not once was there any apology. Check-out was once again bored and dismissive. The only staff that seemed to give a damn all weekend were the breakfast servers. Everyone else was basically borderline rude. Not what you expect when you're paying a high room rate for a special occasion. One the upside, our room was amazing. Really nicely decorated, scrupulously clean and with good in-room facilities. The location is also obviously amazing being right in the Forest. Ultimately though the lovely room and nice breakfast would not make up for the rest of the negatives and I would definitely not stay there again.
one of the prettiest pubs in the new forest inside and outside. food is usually excellent having been a few times though not enough vegetarian choices for regular visits. would recommend especially the garden in the summer
Having eaten here three times during a week in the new forest I have no complaints regarding the service at all, all the staff were polite, well presented and helpful. The food was good, especially the Sunday lunch and the seating was very comfortable with plenty of clean cutlery and napkins on the tables.
Great country pub hidden at the back of the village of Burley. Well priced and great condition Fullers beers plus guest ales. Extensive food menu for the restaurant. Big garden very useful for the good weather. Next door to Youth Hostel if that is the type of place you stay at or the White Buck has a lot of rooms. Good walks close by.
Brilliant place to stay, nothing is to much trouble for the staff. Bar man was amazing definitely new his gins. Would definitely stay again, Ideal base for exploring the forest. Room was amazing, lovely touch of complementary beer , wine and biscuits in the rooms.
